Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
