EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
