Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
